Solvents have a variety of uses including thinning/cleaning paint (mineral spirits for oil-based finishes; water for water-based), stripping paint, thinning wood finishes (alcohol for shellac; lacquer thinner for lacquer), and as a liquid cement for connecting PVC pipe.
