ticket taker

A member of the House Management staff who is responsible for verifying that patrons have the proper articles for admission and for directing them to the the proper auditorium entrance.

Previously, a ticket taker would retain part of a ticket and return the remainder to the patron. Today many theatres will scan the ticket with a handheld device. Some venues partially rip the ticket to indicate it has been used. Still others do nothing--once a ticket is purchased, they don't care whether or not it's used, as long as it's been sold.
