Replacement for Masonite?

We used to use quite a lot of MDF. The surface treatment resists the odd spill but a good soak will work its way through. The edges soak up liquid like blotting paper. Once wet it "blows" and swells quite badly. Takes acrylic stage paint quite well, though. We've never had a real issue with Rosco (or flint's) not adhering.

Ok, that's about what I expected. Presumably, 6-side priming the panels will avoid that being a problem (which should have precluded my asking the question, I suppose...)
