Automated Fixtures Controlling a Martin Robocolor Four head

I recently borrowed a Martin Robocolor four head and a Martin 2501 controller from a youth group I work lights for. I looked up the dip switch charts on-line and after setting the switches to how it says for the lights to be controlable, the lights don't respond. I also tried with a Chauvet Obey 40, with no luck. I could get them to work in their pre-programed chases and sound active mode by switching the different dip switchs. I currently do not have a terminator, which I think is the problem, but if anyone could see and other problems or give any adivce other than I need a terminator, I'd be very happy.

Lack of a Terminator, DMX may result in erratic behavior, but seldom results in no control at all. I suspect it's a pin 2/3 swap issue, as described on page 8 of the RoboColor Pro 400 UsersGuide.pdf.
