What to do with show scenery

Have you discussed this issue with the administration? I've found my high school's administration to be very receptive with such matters. Talk to other departments that share space with you and see what open space you can find - music departments or whoever else uses your theatre space...

What to do with show scenery

What exactly do you mean by "no storage space"? At my high school, we have no storage space, but we store all stock flats/platforms/wood in our shop and the SR wing of our stage. Presumably, you'll use a good amount of flats/platforms for every show, opening up the space you used to store them...

removable floor and tear away scrims

3'x4' "tiles" will most likely be a bit awkward to carry in general. Luaun would be fine, and masonite is not at all heavy if you use something like 1/4" masonite. I haven't seen a problem with splinters on a luaun floor. Will your actors be wearing shoes? I'd suggest 1/2" ply, but that...

    Moving a Manual Revolve Question

Is this a standard revolve just to have? Is it for a specific purpose? If so, what's included? What's going on top of the revolve? Two years ago we had a fairly small revolve (4' circle I believe) made out of a platform is a circle cut out inside and a ply circle attached to 2"x6" on wheels...

    SmartBolts

I think that's a great idea, but very pricey for not too much benefit. Also, how easily could they be stripped? Maybe the indicator has a lifespan of about 20 years, but if someone improperly uses an impact wrench or does damage in some other way, that's $16 or $24 down the drain.

    Multimedia in Anne Frank

No, the audience doesn't necessarily have to read the words. These projections will be mostly occurring during quieter moments on stage - not to cover any changes. There are no scene/costume changes in the show; the entire cast stays on stage in the same area the entire time. A random black...

    Multimedia in Anne Frank

I'm currently in the process of designing the set for the Diary of Anne Frank, and my high school has decided that we would like to incorporate multimedia into the show (for when Anne's words are seen on the stage or we see soldiers marching in the streets, for those who know the show). My...

    Fire effect

We did this at my school two years ago for The Crucible. We had a specific fire unit that was covered in red and orange gels, but I'm not sure if we made it or what. I'll talk to those who were involved and see what I can find out.

    Volunteer Techs

I'd suggest advertising at local high schools. As a high school student, many of my peers work at community theatres instead of or in addition to working in our high school theatre. I know that if a community theatre reached out to me and asked for work on their production, I'd be more than...

    Convertable platforms

Do you mean something like this?: Our set was made almost entirely out of various cubes with paint arranged to mesh together in specific scenes (six different scenes). We made the larger cubes out of 3/4" ply and used the jigsaw to cut two handles in each block and routed them for...

    Clapping for the set!

Themuzicman, you make a very valid point. A set designer's job is technically to define a space for the actors to interact in. When something takes away from the belief that this is an actual space that the characters are in, they're not doing their job. It's like designing an implied wall...

    Hello

What aspects of theatre are you involved in? What position(s) do/have you hold/held? Tell us about yourself! And welcome to CB, it's a really great resource of information, and hopefully you can contribute to that too.

    Clapping for the set!

That's fantastic that your set got so much recognition. Do you have any pictures to post?

    Topheavy Wall

The second side of lauan will definitely help, especially if you have joints in the wall. On my current production we built a 12' cityscape out of ten flats that rotates on wagons, which are attached to the floor on a pivot point via pvc piping and 2"x6" with 1 5/8" holes drilled through. Our...
