    Fabric Drop Ideas

So in planning for an upcoming production of Titanic, I need a way to be able to do a large fabric drop in black that I can then adorn with some "rivets" to represent the side of the ship during the opening scene.Size is roughly 19' tall x 34' wide.Having never really ordered a full size...

    Faux Balustrade

there are about 75 seats within 15' of the pieces. Another 250 15' to 50' away.

    Faux Balustrade

I have to make 2 six foot long sections of balustrade for an upcoming production of Hunchback. Looks like this http://a404.idata.over-blog.com/600x344/0/18/21/95/Paris/Notre-Dame/Chimeres/chimeres69.jpgObviously I'm thinking foam for the central quatrefoil portions, but not sure the best...

    Elevated Structure Framing

So here are two pictures of what I ended up doing. 2x6 stud walls with 2x8 headers and joists. Longest span was 102". The structure was so solid a few members of the orchestra said they have felt more movement on high school permanent stages.

Practical physics question: casters and wagons and weight.

Those are really quite bumpy and loud

Practical physics question: casters and wagons and weight.

Second for the triple swivels Bill linked to above. That's what I used for my 4'x16' barricade for Les Mis, and was able to do a DS move, 180, 180, 360, and US move with only 2 people at any time pushing (there were 12 people on the barricade while moving). It will tend to want to drift...

What to do with a cyc and no fly space.

The theater were I do sets also has this same issue. A fabric cyc (or is it sky drop since it's not curved) is dead hung at the rear of the stage. 38' wide by 25' tall. It has a solid pipe in the bottom pocket that rests on the floor and the fabric is tensioned laterally by line through...

    Elevated Structure Framing

The reason I split the beams (and you can do so, many deck posts get notched on each side for just such a method) is so that the joists had something to bear on (which is what span tables and calculators have indicated). If I double the beam the rim joists only would be resting on the beam and...

    Elevated Structure Framing

So below are pictures of what I came up with. Using essentially doubled 2x6 compression legs (the beam sits where the frame of a platform usually would) and 3 joist/rim joist units sit on top. Using the doubled compression legs is like notching in a 6x6, but in this case the supporting "leg"...

    Elevated Structure Framing

I understand the reluctance (and fear of liability) about answering questions like this, but if people were willing to entertain a discussion on a 16' span that could move (even though most rightly said it was stupid to even try and should be redesigned), I would think asking how to frame a 8.5'...

    Elevated Structure Framing

For an upcoming show I have to create an elevated area 8.5' off the ground that is 32' w x 14' d. This area will be use for a 9 piece orchestra (roughly 32'x8' blue area of picture below) and space utilized by actors (32'x6'). There will be dancing in the show (don't know how much will take...

    Zero-Throw Casters are....moving too much

I also agree with the inertia aspect. When doing les mis I had a 4' x 15' wagon for the barricade, 10 triple swivels. With out any of the "barricade" or actors the thing was like a skateboard when you tried to step onto it. Once we added all the "stuff" the thing was definitely more stable...

    Platform height considerations

I think some got caught up with seeing the word "cantilever" in your post and ignored the "non" part. (I almost did myself). So I assume you want, in simplest terms, a platform with four legs that's tall enough to walk under? Just one single platform? Anything else to attach to besides the...

    Cheap Handrail

Thanks! I was actually quite pleased, even if all the set dressing didn't get completed. Guess you do what you can when you have 4 and a half days from build start to opening night.

    Cheap Handrail

So I ended up making my own railing out of 2x3, routing the top with a thumbnail bit, and the underside with a quarter round leaving a center section the original depth. Not perfect, but were easily made, easily stained and easily used. One person helping during the build thought the railing...
