    Strand Pattern 23

The 23 has a special place in the hearts of many UK lighting techs of a certain age and they are still found in many theatres, schools and church halls today.Although the 23 is not comparable with modern fixtures like the S4 junior, the optics have stood the test of time and they remain pretty...

    Plot Critique Please

Yes, we call it a rig plan or "The Plan" over here in the UK. In lampie rhyming slang (a techie version of Cockney rhyming slang), it's sometimes called the "Desperate" - short for "Desperate Dan", a cartoon character from the Dandy comics. Cheers

Stupid Question - Naming lighting positions

In the UK, a bar (or pipe if you prefer) that is immediately DS of the pros, over the apron or orchestra pit, is called the "advance bar". What makes it different to FOH1 is it's proximity to the pros.I have no idea why it is named that, though.

    WIRELESS POWER EXISTS!

Didn't Intel recently send 60W of power using magnetic fields. Now that's real wireless power although I can't believe that the energy transfer is that efficient.60w sure is quite a lot of LED fixtures.

    Strand-UK/Strand-USA

Re: PLASA2008 ReviewI am saying that Strand has a lot of ground to cover with it's current model range to become a force to reckoned with in the UK console market again.Although the piece is opinion, it also reflects real life in a significant part of the UK professional lighting scene. The...

    PLASA2008 Review

I didn't say Strand had disappeared but I did make a reference to the state of their brand in the UK. Not quite the same thing. Thanks for stopping by.Edit to add: // rather ironically, the Strand auto link through to the CB glossary just flicked me a 404.

    Wacky DMX issues

Alex, much good advice has been given and weird DMX faults can be tricky to trace, so I don't want to clutter up the thread.I would not totally discount a cable issue. Putting a terminator on a "one legged" DMX signal will make a seemingly "working" system break (of course, the system is...

Automated Fixtures Why is intelligent lighting "dumb" on an ETC Lightboard

I have a question that has always puzzled me about the semantics of lighting control. We all know that different consoles use different terminology but...Why do *certain* consoles use the term Groups when they clearly mean Pallettes, Focusses ( or pretty much any other word that isn't Groups)...

Automated Fixtures Why is intelligent lighting "dumb" on an ETC Lightboard

After having attempted to progam a few scanners on a Jands Event Plus years ago, I swore I would only ever use a proper moving light desk. Although I haven't used many ETC consoles, I can see that the control surface of the older desks (as has been said) was not designed for this purpose. It...

    Hi from the UK

In the UK, "spanner" refers to any kind of nut wrench. In lighting, we often use an "AJ" (Adjustable Spanner) on the "hook", G-clamp or J-Clamp.I enjoyed Lekoboy's list. I think, however, that a full size UK/US translation glossary of theatre terms could actually run to serveral pages...

    Hog 3 PC

The Cham Sys chrome will always say Demo Mode unless you have one of their USB PC wings attached. It still is fully functional though with on of the other dongles. I think that they ought to get rid of the Demo Mode title as it is obviously confusing and I dont' see the purpose of it.

    Hi from the UK

Aha, was looking for an introduction thread but gave up. Now I find it. Hi all, My name is Rob and I am a freelance LD and programmer working in the UK and Europe. I have been lurking at the CB forums to get a feel for all things lighting in the US and to brush up on my US terminology...
