Design HS Beauty & The Beast

Beauty and the Beast should have some great, rich, bold colors. Here are some colors I have seen used that worked very well with the show. Keep in mind it depends on how many systems of color you'll be able to use. I also recommend using a light frost, such as R114 with all of your front light...

Design Rubber Banding for tying cable to battens?

I second the tie line and/or Velcro. Velcro is extremely clean and has a longer life than tie line, but tie line is much cheaper and can come in large spools. Just be sure you cut the lengths of tie line into useful sizes. An easy way to measure them is to hold the end in one hand and wrap the...

    Issue with my GeniusPro Lightpalette

First of all, the unit is not meant to be folded. Try using a different CAT-V connector if you have one handy. Instead of trying to clear information from the submasters, check your patch and see if anything is patched to the channels on the subs. If not, try patching something arbitrary (that...

    Issue with my GeniusPro Lightpalette

We have a 300 in our Studio theatre--how many banks of 24 faders do you have?

    Patching Questions

If you're referring to "REM DIM" as remove dimmer, that's not what it stands for, so hopefully that's not what you're doing. But to unpatch channels on an ETC console, you just patch them to Ch. 0. I believe the syntax for an ETC patch should look something like this:31-35 ENTER 0 ENTER

    Audience Lighting (not house)

I recommend using Rosco 104 Tough Silk (R104). When you cut the color (you'll most likely need one sheet per fixture) make sure you place it in the frame so that the lines in the texture are running up and down, which will spread the beam of light from left to right.

Design Hard Block Cues vs. Soft Block Cues

Yeah, I prefer LP to GP because it has more functionality. As for teaching, I'm writing Gage a letter right now. No joke.

    Need basic lighting tips

Here are some main differences between theatrical and dance lighting:Theatrical Lighting- Main objective is to light the actors to see the action on stage. Everything else is secondary, including making it pretty. Your best resources will be front/face light (FOH, boxes/coves, 1st Electric)...

    Audience Lighting (not house)

I think the term you're looking for is "audience blinder," and they're technically a bank of anywhere from 6-12 lamps, and they can do one or multiple things: bump to the beat of the music at a low intensity, literally blind the audience at certain parts in certain songs, or just make the crowd...

Hey, I thought we could share pictures of our shows...

Here is the link to my pictures of "Musical of Musicals The Musical!" I designed lights for this show at Weber State University (Ogden, UT) in Fall, 2007.Jordan Street's Photos | FacebookP.S. I like to use shadows and gobos as much as possible when I design. (: These pictures were...

Design Hard Block Cues vs. Soft Block Cues

So is it just designer preference on whether he or she uses Hard or Soft Block? I'm just wondering if it would be more functional to continue running Lightpalette, which allows for both Hard and Soft Block, as opposed to GeniusPro, which only allows Soft Block. And I really think you should...

    POORLY STRAND300 :(

Definitely open it up and check on the components inside of the CPU. If DHL got throw-happy with it, that console is fragile enough as is. The University owns one, and it's really touchy. I also think that your problem lies in the RJ-11. If you change to RJ-45 cable and your console lights up...

Design Hard Block Cues vs. Soft Block Cues

I'm trying to brush up on the more advanced features of my Strand 520i, and in doing so, I'm trying to figure out the difference between a Hard Block cue and a Soft Block cue. I'm familiar with Tracking and what it does, and the general idea of what a block cue does, but I can't seem to grasp...

    Control/Dimming Strand 520i (500 Series) Mac Dongle

Yeah, I read more about it and I think I would prefer XConnect. XConnect is the same as the Designer's Remote software, but for Mac, and doesn't work as an offline editor, but works while the console is running to make live edits and monitor activity, which is what I would like.I'm going to...

    Lighting Q.O.T.W. (10/30/09)

Honestly, I think it's a simpler matter, as Fred described. Because the grate in those beams is thicker than say, chicken wire, it blocks/absorbs more light. The optics and reflector on a RJ aren't as advanced as those in a Source Four, with a reflector and optics that tend to capture the...
