I have to side with derek, at least for hanging conventionals (which was the question.) Simple PVC 'Truss Protectors' (sometimes questionably called truss condoms) work fine (make sure the 'teeth' of the c-clamp are in contact with the truss, especially when using sidearms. Mega-Clamps, etc...
