Funny thing is (or unfunny, depending on how you look at it), you can totally dim self-ballasted CFLs with an autotransformer. I'm doing it right now. Looks horrible, 0% to 30% is totally black, but you totally can. Actually you can "dim" any ballasted fixture (HMI, LEDs, flos, rainlights, ACLs...

Hey clay -- we always recommend the new smartfade consoles for high schools, mainly because of the price (under 2 grand) and the ease of use (the online tutorial on ETC's website is much more affordable (free!) than some other vendor's tech). they are amazing and completely unintimidating...
