food and drinks in the control booth

In our house, it's simple: No food or drink at consoles or racks. We don't have a "booth" at our venue since the consoles are open and actually in the venue (it's a strange situation...tiny historic venue and it makes thinks awkward). Other houses I've worked and TD'ed at, it's been the same...

    Musician severely shocked by microphone.

As someone who has seen NFG in person quite a few times (Yes, I'm a fan...what of it? :P), I have always seen them performing with SM58 vocal mics. There is no way they were "shocked" by the mic without ability to let go. This is just flat out impossible. If the singer was shocked, it was...

Good PA brands and models for a church

I am one of those Mackie guys simply because the older units can be thrown off of a building and still function, they have plenty of input options and the price is right. Are they the most pristine for studio? No, but I do live sound and durability, consistency and versatility are what I...

    Another Church Sound Thread?

For my .02, Going "down" in quality may not be that damaging if you can get the sound in the right place. 100x65x15 is acoustically a PAIN! That's a very large, flat room. The biggest key is not getting the volume, but the clarity of the signal by getting the sound you want into the areas you...

    Setting rules about mics?

In my venue, we also do the mic brief for performers who aren't accustomed to performing with reinforcement. A lot of our clients include very wealthy private schools or university programs with both kids and adults who have very little experience with mics. Along with the basics (don't blow...

Good PA brands and models for a church

So, without taking into consideration factors such as:-Capacity of the house -Budget of the congregation vs. actual operation costs -talent and composition of talent -Composition of materials in the hall in reference to their acoustic properties -Size and dimensions of the venue in question...

Good PA brands and models for a church

As someone who has designed worship hall sound systems before, I cannot help but to enforce what everyone has said here: Don't buy kit until you know what is causing what you have now to seem lacking. I noticed the first thing on the purchase list is the Behringer X32, and you seem quite keen...

    Countryman Knockoffs

But the B3 is a bit too heavy on the low-end for a lot of voices in my experience, and after shipping the price can be a bit different. Yes, $50 here and there isn't much, but if you're a small venue or are buying a large lot of them, that start to add up quick. Now, I'm not a fan of "cheaping...

    Blown horns or crossovers &$#&***$

At least with the JBL you get a modicum of durability. The Chinese brand speakers off Amazon are always questionable in longevity as they are poor in quality. If they can get the job done consistently then you can trade for quality with a bit of skill in mixing.

Winamp, Windows Media Player or what? Windows compatible audio players.

Multiplay is the way to go, as CrazyTechie mentioned. iTunes is a poor choice when it comes to media players on Windows considering the automations you will find in Multiplay, and you can't beat the price!

    Blown horns or crossovers &$#&***$

Blowing the horns out of Nady speakers could only improve their sound quality :neutral:That being said, this gives you a great chance to save some cash and replace the speaker horns with something of better quality. And, I have seen some sweet deals around the net for horns lately. I would...

Mixers/Consoles Output sound missing from half of our Mackie 1608!

The 1604 VLZ Pro (ver. 1 and 2) do use control ribbons. I don't believe the new CR1604's do, but don't quote me on that one.

    Reasonable lead time for riders

Shoot me an email and I can send it to you. It's not copywritten and it's the generic setup form we send out to every renter or client, so I don't see any reason why I can't send you a copy

    Reasonable lead time for riders

Tons of great stuff already mentioned, but I have something else to throw into the ring that we use at the University owned venue I TD at:We have A LOT of private and non-professional rentals at our venue to keep the lights on in between the union and "co-production" shows. Most of these...

Preferred brands of microphone cable, microphone storage bag and microphone stands?

Re: Preferred brands of microphone cable, microphone storage bag and microphone standI can attest that the GLS cable is actually a good bang for the buck. I do a lot of gigging in the off season with club bands in rock, ska and Jazz and these GLS cables hold up to all the foot stomping, case...
