Amateur, untrained tech director

I'm a high school teacher who serves as technical director in a small private school. I've been doing it for about ten years, but I came to the job with little experience or training. (It's not my primary duty at the school--I teach English and social studies as well as advisement and administrative duties.)

We perform in a non-traditional (multi-purpose) space, and have to do a lot of improvising. Our budget is fairly limited as well.

I came across this site while looking for some tips on building a set piece. It looks like it might be a useful location for tips, hints, etc.
