Ashes

I need to design a set for a series of messages about ashes - when everything you take for granted turns to dust. I thought of using the sent of liquid smoke wafting throughout the auditorium (with and explanation from the speaker that no, we aren't on fire). Not real comfortable with that. I really need something visual. Help!

Black confetti? Too much trouble too burn some paper before hand and then use the ash from that.
