An iron core, wrapped with copper wire (much like a transformer) used to lengthen the rise time on phase-control dimmers, and thus reduce filament sing and RFI interference.

The picture below shows two chokes (the penny-colored donut-shaped things) in an ETC Sensor D20 dual 20A dimmer module.
