Christmas light "pop" without pyro

I'm doing Reckless for contest. I can't use any sort of pyro effect like flash paper, so I'm looking for a way for a Christmas light on the tree to "pop" at three different points in the show a la Tuna Christmas. I have an extra channel available on my shoebox dimmer/relay, so the current idea is to use a computer fan with a funnel mounted on top with one of those fake cigarettes that you blow into in the hole of the funnel. Combine that with a "bulb pop" sound effect, and we'll see the lights surge, flicker, then go out leaving a small puff of smoke in the air.
Does anyone have any other, perhaps more simple ideas?

A squeeze bulb, a length of tubing, and a small amount of some non-flammable powder comes to mind. Load the powder in the end of the tubing, place it next to where you want the puff, and someone offstage blows into it, or works the squeeze bulb, bicycle pump, or whatever air source you have.

Or mount a small strobe set for single flash near where the bulb is supposed to pop, and don't bother with the smoke puff.
