To go back to the original question, here's how I would do the playback.
Set up a QLab workspace in advance with an empty group cue for each number. Name the groups by the name of the performers or song (or whatever is most helpful). Give the groups cue numbers that represent the order of the pieces (like I.1 for first piece in Act I etc) and turn off Automatic Numbering.
As the CDs materialize, add each file to the appropriate group cue. Or preferably, require that media be brought via USB stick and do the same thing.
An easy way to do what sk8ersdad suggested is to pre-program each group to auto-follow to a disarm cue targeting the group. So after each track finishes it will disarm itself, indicating that it has been played.
