HD (High Definition) is a higher than normal Video/Audio signal.
In most cases, HD refers to the televison format.
Technically HD refers to anything higher than SD (Standard Definition). It is cagogorised like this:
Frame Size
For example 1080x720
Scanning System
Tells the user whether it is Progressive Scanning, or Interlaced Scanning.
Frame Rate
Tells the user the Frames Per Second (FPS)

This information is often displayed like this:
1080x720i32
Meaning the resouloution is 1080 pixels by 720 pixels, is interlaced scanning and has a frame rate of 32 frames per second.

HD TV's & Projectors (normally) come in one of 3 vertical resolutions.
720p Meaning it has 720 vertical scan lines, and is progressive scan.
1080i Meaning that it has 1080 vertical scan lines, and is interlaced scanning.
1080p Meaning that it has 1080 vertical scan lines, and is progressive scanning.
