I assume people don't worry about inter-pair crosses in snakes because the pairs are individually shielded?

The noise cancellation of a balanced audio circuit is only realized if the two signal wires are twisted together as a pair, inside a common shield. Having the two signal wires in separate pairs will just result in hums, buzzes, and crosstalk.

This is a very important concept to audio interconnection. I recommend you to do some reading on the hows and whys of balanced audio.
 
I appreciate your contributions to this thread, but I've understood balanced audio for 30 years.

It's precisely because I do, that I am concerned about not only opens and intra-pair crosses (and crosses to shield), but inter-pair crosses.

Oh. I see the problem. "Cross" here doesn't mean a mis-wire; it means a conductor short. The dangers of using IT cabling terminology with audio cables.
