I think what @JohnD meant to say, was literally any method at all is cheaper and easier than working with concrete, everything said and done.

Depends on how you light it, but unless you dump spotlights into it like you're doing an archaeological dig, the camera can be very forgiving to the quality of construction of a fake cave.

I don't know how big you need this thing to be but my inclination is that a chicken wire substrate warped within a 1x4 framework should give you the basis of a cave. Add a bunch of canvas or muslin strips with a slime of elmer's glue mixed down with water and you can skin the gluey fabric over the chicken wire mesh like you'd make a piñata. The trick is warping the mesh as you go to structure it like a cave. Once you let it dry, all you have to is give it a convincing paint job and you'll be good to go.

Disassembly is much easier this route than if you mold this thing out of concrete or plaster.
