Side stages in a proscenium theatre that extend out into the audience and intercept the audience floor. Evolved from Japanese Kabuki Theatres, they are a distinct attribute of many theatres built in the 1960s/'70s, most notably the Pepsico Theatre at SUNY-Purchase.
 
Only thing I would add is that the side platforms can be at multiple levels and as designed int he Pepsico Theater at Purchase College, run the full length of the seating chamber walls. left and right.
