On Wednesday February 29, a major event occurred: UL issued the first edition of UL1691, the Standard for Single Pole Locking-Type Separable Connectors.

This standard is a joint UL and CSA effort, and covers the E1015 and E1016 cam-type connectors (familiarly called "cam-loks) made by a number of manufacturers and prevalent in the North American entertainment industry. By 2015, every UL or CSA listed connector in this family will have to be re-evaluated under the UL1691 standard. This will insure safe inter-mating of connectors from different manufacturers. Previously, connectors of this type were only tested with other connectors from the same manufacturer, and there was no common dimensional configuration used by multiple manufacturers as with NEMA types.

The issuance of this standard is the culmination of a long body of work by our industry that began in 1993, and involved the modifications to the NEC, work by the entertainment industry, UL, CSA, and CANENA.
