1. Lamp. A medium screwbase incandescent lamp. Generally found in older striplights. The "R" indicates a built-in reflector, and the "40" indicates the maximum bulb diameter, in eighths of an inch (5" dia.). Available in SPot or FLood, 150 or 300 watts.

2. Fixture. "R40 Can." In the PARcan family, a unit with a medium screwbase socket, accepting a maximum 300W R40 lamp. Can also use a PAR38 lamp in either spot or flood. Colorframe sizes vary greatly by manufacturer, from 7.5"x7.5" to 6"x6". Only useful on the smallest of stages, but make for great task lights; or running lights, especially when fitted with a blue CFL lamp.
