    Architectural Control

Hello, I am working on a project where we need a DMX signal played back at different times of the day, I have been looking into Solid State Controllers. In particular the CueServer system, does anybody have any insight into this unit? My boss would love it if we could access the unit...

How many safeties on a PAR-bar?

I have always used only two safeties for PAR Bars, I safety all individual lights hung with clamps, but since the PARs are bolted to the bar, I see no individual need for the safety. Safeties are to back up the temporary rigging of the lights, the bolts on the PAR bar are permanent. I agree...

    Control/Dimming Sensor Dimmer Rack Problems

I wasn't here back then so I know for a fact that its (2) Sensor 96 racks that were installed prior to 1995. I will post the software version of the CEM when I get back to work on Monday. The problem is a fast fade up and down, there is a varied time of darkness but no more than a few seconds...

    Control/Dimming Sensor Dimmer Rack Problems

Hello, I have a sensor dimmer rack that was installed in 1991. We are running the rack with an ETC ION 1024. Recently it's begun flashing the entire lighting system at random times. An illustration: I turn on a system of lights in the catwalks, all the lights then shut off, then about...

Microphones Position for the head of mic

I just recently did a production of "A Chorus Line" and we had many lapel mics of that size. We used "The Ear Rig" used on this website: Microphone Placement Techniques for Theatre - Bright and Loud We couldn't find hellerman sleeves, so we used 1/2" shrink tubing (careful with the...

What's the most important part of your design process?

Know the show. There's a reason the first few steps of the design process is read, research and more research. I find researching the time, place and social/economic situations of a play bring to light to some ideas. Also the more you know about the area the play takes place in will help you...

How much weight can these bars hold?

I worked a gig in a high school a couple of years back and when we went on stage we saw a track with a pully attached to it, when we asked what it was for, the only reply, "Peter Pan" the TD had gone to the local hardware store and cobbed together a way to fly the kids off stage. They...

    ETC backcap

I haven't had any problems with the new ones we bought in 07, but we did have the caps from the mid nineties that had the carbon arcing problem. (The pin wouldn't sit correctly in the lead, so the leads were filling with black carbon until they wouldn't work anymore). We were able to get new...

    Which Hazer?

I have rented the Radiance hazer and was very impressed, the model I rented had a road case with built in adjustable fan (very nice!). Just one filled my entire space (485 seat proscenium) in a matter of minutes.

    Danger of 'prop' gun

Hmm, I seem to remember somebody telling me that it is our job to make "magic" in the theater. Yes, its hard to compete with the special fx of the movies. We don't have years of computer rendered post production to make it look realistic. Remember- when using any kind of live round, you are...

    Replacing House Lights

Wow, who thought you could fill the whole room with the same foot candles of light, but the colors could look different... Thank you, definitely something I did not think of. Luckily our theater is Green, Black and light brown. But I definitely will keep the CRI in mind.

philips eW Downlight SM as houselights

Most likely they got assistance from an efficiency non-profit to install them. The amount you can get is determined by the power savings. We have switched a lot of our campus to CFL and T5 fixtures using these "coupons"I am also hoping to get help from one of these companies- by switching...

    Replacing House Lights

THANK YOU. All this information is wonderful. Being a newer technology, I feel I'm almost starting over from working with incandescent stage units- i.e.- a lot of the photometric math no longer applies when it comes to LEDs. I know of another theater in Vermont who did CFL house...

    Danger of 'prop' gun

It always scares me when people are using prop firearms in a live production. Even with blanks- there are still projectiles. You should never have to "fire" anything to make a gun sound effect.
