Breaking a Mirror, ONSTAGE

Yup... I am directing a production of Albert Camus' Caligula...
There is a scene, where in a fit, Caligula smashes a mirror...
I was looking through some threads here, and couldn't find anything, really applicable...
Thoughts?
We need to do it 6 times... So, cheap (yet safe) is important...

These might be dumb questions but can you give us a little more detail? Is this a large mirror on a wall or a stand or is it a small table or hand mirror? Does it have to be visible to the audience when it's in it's intact state?

Good Questions...
I would prefer it be visible, it is used as a mirror prior to its being broken
I would also prefer it to be smaller, say 2'x2' or so...
on a stand, so that the whole thing can go away during the scene change,
Caligula, also uses a fragment after it is broken...
Thanks

Two sides and a slight of hand. Cal in a fit, when breaking it rotates the boken side out having a lose piece. Tape face with clear before you break it.

When doing Dracula one year, I made sheets of sugar glass on a cookie tray for each performance. Painted with aluminum paint, it looks like a mirror and breaks quite nicely. I'm sure the formula is around this forum somewhere.

Even with sugar glass, you'll need a sound effect. I was thinking sugar glass as well, but will it last until its cue without breaking?

As for the shard of glass, they sell rubber safety shards that look like glass.

Use a blunt object, like a hairbrush to break the sugar glass.

Sent from Taptalk for Android, this was.
