ETC D60 Desire vs. ETC 11" Selador

We (small HS in Maine) have a few of the Selador Paletta's and LOVE them! best investment we could have made. Of course having a mix of instruments to use is also nice to train the kids on.

The Paletta's do well on backdrops and cyc's.

I'd get the 21" units for the cyc, fewer c-clamps and hardware will save some weight on the pipe, as well as fewer connections that are failure points. The 21" size still lends itself for a floor wall/scenic was as needed. The linear design lends itself better to cyc's and backdrops.

Then get the Desire's for the stage wash fixtures. You can add accessories such as hi-hats/top hats as needed, which might be useful on stage. You can't add those accessories to the Paletta's.

You NEED to demo with a set of lenses. You NEED to know what lenses to order as they are expensive to buy additional. Take a day or 3 and try them out, try different lenses to get the washes and coverage you need. Figure out how many Paletta's to do the cyc, then budget for that, then add Desire's after. The Cyc is going to be harder to light correctly, thus my inclination to spend there first.

And before you bet the farm on the selador units, take a look at the altman Spectra Cyc. They just released a 200w model that it supposed to be pretty amazing.
