1. A mutation formed on or in wood due to bacteria, insects, or fungus. A gall prevents wood from being easily cut down, planed, and shaped to be prepared for final use. Can be problematic structurally. Also can be a bonus due to its unique characteristics added to the wood and can be a visually pleasing additive to decorative pieces.

2. To become misshapen, to the point that the object no longer functions as intended. "The threads of the bolts were so galled, the nut wouldn't go on."
