Gobo for "Shadow of mast and sails."

Part of a play we are doing is set on a ship, brigantine class (c. 1770ish), and it calls for a "shadow of mast and sails," on a few characters. I'm thinking that if I were on such a ship it would be more a diffuse flat light than shadows. I'm thinking I could do this with a gobo of a square sail and then chase it with a diffuse light. Which would give me hard edges in certain spots but mostly the diffuse light you would have in shade on a clear sunny day. Right? Thanks.
