Metamorphoses - sand and water

Our theatre group is doing Metamorphoses. In the first scene an actor holds a jar with sand and water. The two need to mix together, but then slowly separate during a two paragraph speech. I have tried real sand and also aquarium gravel, both of which separate too quickly. Any ideas? Has anyone solved this?
Cheers

You'll probably need a substance denser than water, such as gelatin, in order to slow the separation.

Possibly mineral oil or baby oil. Look up how to make a snow globes online (some mix gelatin that you get at the drug store with distilled water). Also, depending on how far away your audience is and how you are lighting it, the sand may not read well. You may want to look at alternatives which look like sand.
