A tool that once enjoyed widespread usage, but has since been replaced by the adjustable c-wrench. Today, the term is often used to refer to a pipe wrench, although technically, a monkey wrench has parallel, non-grooved jaws, and thus is not appropriate for use on pipe.
The monkey wrench is still available, and valuable for use on large diameter plumbing fittings and in other cases where a c-wrench is too small or where tongue and groove pliers are inappropriate.
