Nutcracker Prop with removable head

I recently participated in a production of Nutcracker, and one of their props got me thinking. They use a traditional nutcracker with the head "detached." It is held on with dowels until Fritz breaks the doll. The bit wasn't working consistently, so I started to wonder if we could build a nutcracker with a release lever for the head. That way Clara can choose when in the scuffle the head comes off in Fritz's hands. Any ideas (or places where this prop can be bought)? TIA
