I recently saw a talk by Bob Bernhardt. If you don’t know his work, he lights things like the super bowl halftime show and So You Think You Can Dance.
For the Super Bowl he uses about 21 fixtures for front light on the star.
Why so many? He wants a
fill light with no shadows, and a
key light to give definition. If your only source of light is a stadium away, you use 20 movers for your fill, and a follow spot for key.
He showed a picture. From low spot in the center, 10 or so movers on each side.
