A fastener that makes tight, strong, wood joints that are much stronger that the mere butt-joints they are reinforcing. Kreg is the most common manufacturer. Thejig is generally clamped to the surface of the wood piece and holes for the screws are drilled with a special stepped drill bit through the guides on the jig.
The two pieces of wood to be joined are pre-fit, and a pocket screw is driven into the pocket to connect the pieces. The resulting joint is not quite as strong as traditional joinery, but it's much faster to assemble.
The resulting holes can be plugged, but are often located in places that are not particularly visable.
