Speaker Matrix real-time scene switching? Poor man's TiMax

I've been talking to the local renaissance fair a little bit about their PA needs, mostly for some of the horse arena stuff. I've recently seen a few articles about the TiMax Soundhub and Talent Tracker which got me thinking about Matrix Mixers/DSPs etc. that might be able to switch presets in real-time and not cost $30k+, ok $12k+ for the smallest processor which also does effects playback but still probably not in the budget for this application.
I know this is kind've a pipe dream but I'm wondering if anyone has any familiarity with any matrix mixers that don't cause audible artifacts when switching presets. The idea being that there is generally just one actor moving up and down a horse arena with an audience on two or three sides of the oval. If you can delay one input into various outputs at different rates and then switch that as the actor moves from one end to the other you approach having the sound localized properly, haas effect, blah blah.

Anyway, any thoughts or why not just do __ are appreciated.
