Stage Floor

Any thoughts about a good construction technique to keep a stage from sounding like a drum head as it is walked on? We are probably going to want carpet as the walking surface to deal with a worship band.

Is this an existing stage or one you are building from scratch?

Either way, I've had good success with this product: SoundStop Sound Proofing Fiberboard | Home Page, or similar.

This will be built from scratch 2' above an existing concrete floor

In that case, see this thread: http://www.controlbooth.com/forums/scenery/14277-building-band-platform.html. The thread mentions using a Celotex-type product under the 3/4" plywood decking OR on top under the layer of finished floor, possibly hardboard or MDF. Fiberglass batt insulation or spray polyurethane foam could also be used. Museav makes very good points regarding building codes and fire ratings.

If you're having problems at your local supply store when you ask for Celotex, ask for Homasote. Availability is different from one part of the country to another.

make sure you check into fire sprinklers (if your building is sprinklered) some jurisdictions require sprinklers under anything 18" or higher

You might also wish to consider doing a really good job of "herring-bone" type bracing under the percussion area, so your drummer doesn't bounce.
