In the UK the Strand Electric Company began operating in 1914 to serve London's theater district. Meanwhile in the US, in 1926 Century Lighting opened for business in New York to serve Broadway. In 1969 Strand, a company within the Rank organisation, purchased Century from then-owned Lighting Corporation of America, forming Century Strand. In 1976 the name was changed to Strand Century; and in 1989 the Century name was dropped.

Today, Strand Lighting (Tech Support: 1-800.4.STRAND) continues as a leading name in stage, television, motion picture, and architectural lighting and services. In 2006, Strand Lighting became part of the Genlyte Group. Genlyte is a collection of over forty lighting companies with a wide range of specialties from architectural lighting and control to street lighting and entertainment lighting and control with Vari*Lite and Strand Lighting anchoring the entertainment lighting offerings of Genlyte. Genlyte was purchased by Philips in 2008.
