Zello or other PT apps for coms?

Anyone ever use Zello or other walkie talkie like apps on smartphones for communication between sound/light/backstage tech and crew? We use lots of volunteers, have a low budget and everyone has a smartphone. Our theater is a 1930s era converted high school with a 1000 seat theater and a stage the is literally bigger than a basketball court. Actually it is a basketball court as well as a stage with lights, spots, curtains etc.

Personally I wold be wary becasue their phones will certainly be on backstage then.

I've used Zello with some highschool shows that I assit and do design with. It will not be an adaquate SHOW CALLING comm. but it works great to just keep intouch with backstage/places/Front of House etc.

we use mumble with some degree of success. there are a few threads around here about it...
