Gobos and Colortran 5/50s?

Hello,

The director for the Jr. drama department at the school wants a projection of theatre masks (happy sad faces) as a curtain warmer instead of a bubble we usually do.
So I told her I will found out if our lights can do it.
I was just wondering if our spotlights, Colortran 5/50 Ellipsodials' can use Gobos if so where I would insert the holder etc.

thanks : )

Yes, you can do gobos, although they won't be as clear and precise as say, a Source Four. The gobo holder will insert right in front of the top framing shutter.

Do you have holders?

Be sure to put the gobo in upside down and backwards.

Great thanks :)
No we do not have any holders, Maybe we could buy a kit? I think I have seen some somewhere..Any suggestion on what what site to buy a kit from? I will check immedia, our local supply store.

Your local shop should have what SHARYNF suggested. I recommend trying them before you go to an online source, because it has been said here many times before and I will say it again...

"Make friends with your local dealer network!"

If you're just projecting a single gobo, no need for a 'kit'. Just a gobo and a holder, which will set you back $20 or less. If you have the budget, might as well pick up as many gobo holders as you can afford while you're up there. I wouldn't buy other gobos until they are specifically called for, excluding all types of breakup gobos. You can never have too many of those!!!

Depending on desired sharpness, you'll likely want a donut also. We'll now watch a couple of short films. Hit it, AVgeek!

Thanks guys : ) For some reason I thought gobos and gels were cheaper :p
I will ask her if she wants any other patterns then I will head over to our dealer and see if they even have lighting accessories. If not I will have to find another dealer close. We really haven't bought much new lighting anything except gel sheets in a while, but we use immedia all the time for our audio needs.
Might consider a 'donut' if it helps with sharpness, this particular one would be nice to have sharp.

Off topicish-
I was driving in another town the other day and say a big "Gemeni" sign and was like "Ooh, Gemeni store", I go to it and it's a auto shop :/

$10 is about the cheapest lighting accessory you'll find anywhere apart from gels, gel frames, donuts ang gobo holders and of course the essential SAFETY CABLES at a whopping $1.50-2.50ea. You will find out very quickly that lighting (even cheap lighting) is very expensive! [Try looking up the cost of custom made steel gobos, or photo-quality glass gobos if you really want a shock!]

Well that's a let down, unless you're in the market for car parts too, of course! Was it spelled thataway? The lighting company is spelled Gemini. EDIT: You probably found yourself at a Gemini (Goodyear Tires) shop. Yeah, they're not much on lighting accessories but they do have extensive experience with donuts -- of the tire variety. Still not much help in your case I'm guessing; unless you have a flat, in which case a lighting donut won't be of much help ;).

I have used the 5/50s many times for Gobos and I can confirm what Derek has said the use of a Donut will improve the sharpness. Another trick to improve the sharpness is to use a GLC lamp instead of the FEL and make sure the fixture is correctly bench focussed. You will also find you need to keep the dimmer in the 50% to 70% range otherwise the gobo will become so hot it becomes cherry red and acts as a second light source which is a common reason the image becomes fuzzy.

Thank you Derek for adding the links for the 'How To' series found at the Apollo website. A number of lighting solutions and tips are documented on video for members of our lighting community, specifically to help educate and demystify the craft.

Thanks again Derek for pointing these out!

Sorry, when I meant I thought they were cheaper I meant gobo kits, the 10 dollars for gobo and whatever else for holder and donut is fine.
And yes, all our fixtures have a safety cable : ) The Cycs and color bars even two : )
Yeah, Said "Oh well : (" And continued to Fridays for a cast party :p

Church,
Alright I will make sure to get a donut then and not to have it on full.
The gobo will see maybe 7-10 uses of 5-15 minutes each a year : )
