Super Bowl The Who performance

Can anyone speak to the types of equipment that go into the super bowl half time performances? I just saw The Who perform and the scale of the lighting and staging they use is AMAZING! Especially to have it then all vanish within a matter of minutes.

Were those lasers they were using too? It looked amazing, and expensive...

They had a series of lasers as well as LEDs (Ithink) that at times looked like they could have been lasers in fog or haze.

That stage blew me away. I kinda expected something pretty neat lighting wise....and was not disappointed, this was definitely my favorite halftime show in at least 5-6 years.

Best. Halftime. Show. Ever.

Seriously.

Against the NFL's wishes, I recorded it and am keeping it forever. The stage blew me away, at first I thought it was just some fluorescent tubes under plexi or something, but it was a full RGB screen. That was amazing. The pyro was great, the lasers were great, basically everything was great.

Also, The Who's site is completely hosed.

probably not something easy to find out, but anyone know the brand of intels they used? my shot in the dark would be varilite, but i could be wrong. very awesome show. i have to agree, best in quite a few years.

The lasers seemed to be RGB color mixing.. Is that possible? It was an inpressive! I would mind working on that someday ;)

Yup, they do have RGB lasers that can color mix. I will have to say the design and programming of this show was amazing. I would say the best i've ever seen for super bowl, there was alot but it wasn't overwhelming, it all looked perfect. I would really love to see a equipment list and would love to know who designed it.

The power use age and cabling alone for this must be mind boggling. Nonetheless having to be the guy running the light board, having all of this rest in your hands.

From what it looked like they were using argon gas lasers. Very bright and very powerful!! It was a great show!!

I heard it was a mixture of Chauvet, ADJ, and NeoNeon fixtures.

Very funny...

I thought the production side of the halftime show was great, but I could do without the musicians of the last couple of years. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the music; The Who, The Rolling Stones - great bands - in their day. Let's face it - they are well past their prime. Does the NFL have some contract in place to only use aging rockers? Seriously, the wardrobe malfunction was not that big a deal.

All in all, I was disappointed by the music itself, but was thrilled by the production. The programming of the movers around the border of the stadium was perfect. The laser use was very tasteful and not overly gaudy as is sometimes the case. Even the spots rocked. I love the way they spotted to non-lead musicians in blue and the way the cross the spots for the leads. That looked awesome on TV. I would love to see a writeup on the makeup of the rig, particularly how many universes of DMX it took for this setup. Also, how they developed that much haze in an outdoor stadium.

I agree to some extent. I think that, musically, The Who was ok, but it didn't blow my mind. The NFL is in the business of organized sporting events not concerts. Led Zeppelin might be a cool half time show, but I digress.

my guess is they pick bands that appeal to the older audience watching the events. This being why we've had paul McCartney, Rolling Stones...etc, prince is not quite consistent with that guess. They also need bands that have clean music and whatever else.

I'd hope the people running the NFL aren't the people picking the bands.

I'm thinking there was some tie-in with CSI, since the game was on CBS, and so is CSI, and the Who does the CSI theme songs.

I don't think Daltry and Townsend are up to this size event any longer. I've been a fan for 30 years, and they used to crush large scale stuff like this, even after Keith Moon died. Now it seems that they were more worried about not getting censored than nailing the show.

I think the producers have to go with acts that will be familiar (but not necessarily appealing) to a wide range of people. Like when they used to do the cross generational thing, like Aerosmith and Brittney Spears and whoever, which I'm glad they don't do any longer.

Can you imagine Three Days Grace or Janus do this? How about Rage Against the Machine? Or a NIN reunion? Or Yo Yo Ma. Maybe Green Day could pull it off, but some would complain that their music is too political. And who else has a cross-cultural, cross-generational appeal? Taylor Swift? I think the only act that could fill the bill would be Beyonce. Even if you don't like her music, she's attractive.
