Hanging Iron With Split D Ring???

Here's a photo of a hanging iron a rental group brought in. Looking closely at the D ring, I see it has an open split hidden inside the bend of the flat bar. Mine are all welded, and I'd never put anything else with a split like this overhead. Is this normal and acceptable? The flat bar itself doesn't quite look or feel like steel to me either, but it might just be due to the patina my older collection has developed.

Pretty sure that's straight from the truck tie-down section at the Big Box. No good.

Well I've been trying to think of a non-theatrical-rigging source for it but what you can't see in the photo is that it's got the bottom iron bend in it and everything. They have a bunch of them, both top and bottom style. Not like any truck tie-down ring I've ever seen. I'll ask the client where they got them next time they're in.

In any case, these weren't super appropriate for the application they were brought in for anyway (Hollywood flat). Nor were the malleable clips, bent-eye turnbuckles, quick links and sketchy strapping-framed (and barely framed) flat they wanted to hang. So they got some bad news, a shopping list, and the name of the nearest ETCP rigger from me last night. They keep referring to their fly op as their "rigger"...
