how does the 3/5 pin to 4 pin dmx ram power supplies work and is it possible for me just to connect the 2 data lines to a 5 pin dmx plug and the 2 power lines to a regular 24v power supply?

NO.
4 pin is for scrollers. 3-5 pin are for DMX never the twain shall meet.

The answer is "yes, you can". This is effectively what an off-the-shelf 4 pin power supply does. I rolled my own for an installation.

But you darn sure better know exactly what you're doing.

I do know somewhat of what I'm doing but just in case for future use I am putting a low voltage drop rectifyer inside so the device always gets the correct polarity
