Mixers/Consoles How should i connect 2 Sound desks?

Ok FYI

When you ask these sorts of questions it is importatnt to include not only the size of board but also the make and model. It is also good to include the intended aplication and what types of source input you are using (ie...wireless mic's, CD player, computer).

Also are you just trying to use the second board as a side car or for monitors?

Other wise as long as you are matching same output levels to same input levels there should not be any real sound quality problems.

Sorry but in the sound world the details do count. Do not mean to sound harsh or anything.

Does you desk have seperate line inputs and mic inputs?

If so, you can take the outputs of one board and plug them into the line inputs on channels of the other.

If it only has mic ins, you have to be careful with Phantom power. In some cases, it can damage the first mixer.

As Kally noted, it depends on what you are trying to do. The challenge often comes in addressing aux sends, groups, etc., if you have any of those that need to span or be common to both consoles then that is more complex than simply using one console as a submix into the other console.

Also, this is harder or easier depending on model/style (analog vs. digital)

Yes, line output to line input. What do you do on each board, and which line out(s) and which line in(s) you use, depend on the application.

If they're low-end analog boards watch out for added noise floor since you are effectively up to doubling the number of steps in the signal chain, so you will have to be careful setting gain structure.

If you have an LS9 or an M7, you can use the cascade function to bring the 2 boards together!

This feature is not limited to those two consoles, or digital consoles in general. The A&H Mix Wizard allows this, with the addition of an expansion card. Although, the OP said "24 channel desks" so he obviously has none of the consoles that either of us mentioned.
