Design LED LIGHT Strip design

So my teacher recently approached me and said "I wanna put LED Lights on the front of the set and get them to flash and change colors and be really cool" So what should I get? digital LED's, Analog, or Arrays or using a led pixel screen? Also how to program

This is mostly a question of budget and what you'd like to do with them.
There a million different designs out there for individual LED units. LED strip can be had in conventional and pixel controlled varieties. I recently saw an "LED Neon" product that I'm still searching for an application for. LED screens/panels exist, but are usually more of a video product and require a decent amount of control infrastructure and content creation to do well. So I would say get a budget and a better definition of "be really cool" then look at places like superbrightleds.com and environmentallights.com for ideas on what product you'd actually like to use.
