Recording live audio

For very basic starters, you would need a microphone(s), and a sound card with preamps to get the audio into the computer. Or, if you already have a sound board, you could use an aux send or two and a CD recorder to record a feed from the board.

If you could be more specific as to what you are trying to do, we could offer more productive responses.

That's a very broad question. Dave suggested the most basic setup, but it can get complicated and expensive as well. Are you wanting to multitrack record? Do you need to lock to timecode for video reference? Are you looking to go all computer or standalone hardware? If multitrack, how many? What's the budget? What are you trying to accomplish?

Or, depending on exactly what you're recording, you could go down the road of a stand-alone recording device. My last job, we had a Zoom H4 recorder which had a pair of stereo mics built in, plus inputs for XLR or jacks, so you could plug in a pair of external mics. It recorded in either WAV or MP3 format, then you just plug it into your computer, drop the files onto the hard drive and edit as necessary. It was simple, not particularly expensive, and it worked well (much better than the DAT machine it replaced after one of my colleagues dropped it into a lake....).
