Smoky fire hits Smith Theater building on Main Street

A lunchtime fire today in a theater building on 600 block of Main Street drew dozens of onlookers, according to witnesses at the scene.

The fire was reported at 12:45 p.m. at Shea’s Smith Theatre at 654 Main, the Buffalo Fire Department said. Smoke was seen billowing from the main entrance to the building that houses the theater, said personnel at the fire alarm office. The Smith is adjacent to the lobby of Shea’s Performing Arts Center.

The fire was brought under control at 1:08 p.m.

A worker from the Bijou Grille, located across the street at 643 Main, said that the deconstruction of the Metro Rail rail system on that block of Main caused concern among firefighters.

“A lot of smoke was coming from the building,” said the restaurant worker, who declined to be identified.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The extent of damages has not been determined.

Now I'm suspicious.

Just kidding, but I do think it's funny when people choose to remain anonymous in situations like these.
