Stiff XLR cables

I was recently given several brand new XLR cables wrapped much like an extension cord in their packaging. Since opening them they seem stiff, they don't lay flat and are relatively impossible to wrap properly. When we try to use the 'over under' wrap technique, so we can hang them, all we get is a tangled mess. Is there any way to relax them?

Sometimes cheap cables simply aren't worth the effort.
