Was used traditionally for hanging wallpaper, and in theatre, for attaching muslin/canvas to wood framing members of flats, as well as for dutchmanning.
Though wheat paste's use declined with the advent of pre-mixed pastes and pre-pasted wallpapers, today there is a whole style of street art focusing on wheat paste.
Wheat paste is typically made by mixing wheat flour and water and boiling it, but there are many different recipes. (I must have always used the "instant" variety, that required no cooking, came in green 1-lb. bags. Start with warm water and add powder until the consistency of thick gravy, stirring constantly. Use immediately, spoils easily.)
