Unless specified otherwise, ALL topics posted in QotD are intended for students, amateurs, other non-professionals until one week from the initial post has past. Those who know may kibbitz, but should not expose the answer for one week.

The expendable material has been removed for obvuscatory porpoises.

Beats me!

Cheating with reverse image search helps a bit on the "hint" but as you hoped not really at all with the original item. I remain happily perplexed.

Could a hint refering to a 1977 David Lynch film be close?

I carry one that I still use on tests (and occasional sketched out drawings)! they're still super useful, more people should really know about them. I got mine with some other supplies from my Grandfather when I started my engineering studies, along with a different model of the object in question.

While I don't graduate till this coming spring, let's see if anyone else knows
