Conventional Fixtures Scoop Light Replacement

I needed to do something different for house lights in my theater. A big old fashioned scoop would have been ideal but not always practical these days. I decided to go with ETC S4PARS with XWFL lenses. They are working well for my needs. It's not that I regret them in any way. However I found another option at LDI that would also have worked and many of you may not know about.

I was talking with the good people at L&E and discovered a product from them called the "Little Dipper". It's their modern version of a scoop with a frosted lens and a GLA 575 lamp. I don't own one but it looks great. When I get a chance I'm going to try to add [-]Leffew[/-] a few to the theater's inventory.

I don't care what they say--NOTHING can replicate the quality of light from an 18" scoop with a 1KW PS-52 I.F. lamp! And WHY oh WHY did they have to make it take a 7 3/4" x 7 3/4" color frame??? MSRP $292, vs. $264 for an Altman 155.

Long live the original!

And none of them new-fangled axial jobbers for me: (Focusing Scoop? THERE's an oxymoron for you.

I agree that there is nothing exactly like an original. However, in my case I went with something different because in the S4PAR/XWFL I got something similar in look that uses a lamp that: lasts longer, is more efficient, and is part of my regular inventory. It's just more convenient. For our friends who use instruments with GLA 575's the Little Dipper offers the same options. Perhaps replacement was too strong of a word for the thread title. I'm just trying to point out an interesting option.

Hey, I'm not the only one who loves my old scoops! When they rebuilt my theater they tried to convince me to throw them out, and we fought, and bled, and I defended my beloved scoops.

The Little Dipper does look nice though, especially for those times when I'm already out of pipe space and can't squeeze in a scoop.

I've got to admit at first I hated my scoops, especially since they eat up a lot of space, but now that I had to design a show not using them as top light to prevent light bleed on a (scrim being used as a) cyc, I really appreciate them. However, I do wish I could have used something better than the scoops to light the top half. They were pretty wimpy in this application when compared to modern technology. But hey, it worked. And whatever works is good.

But like everything from L&E, it's very pricey. $300 bucks ?, gimme a break !.

Exactly, how is that little dipper worth $300? Think of all the used scoops you could get for that.

Additionally, isn't the little dipper essentially a glorified Olivette, seems we have come full circle.
