It seems to me as though any metal heating to "red hot" temperatures would experience oxidation that would blacken it, at least to some degree. I think it's when you get to the point where they're crumbing is when it's time to replace them :p

I don't see why connecting the light directly to the console would hurt anything. Maybe your Colortran was just buggy.

Yeah, I think a Source 4 or a Pacific is the cheapest you'll get a cold beam from. It does seem odd, however, that you're getting overpowering heat from 300w PAR lamps.
