Applause-o-Meter

I am looking to create an applause o meter type thing. I am thinking about just creating one with lights that are then just plugged in, running the control from the board. Any one got any other ideas or thoughts on the matter? Our budget is relatively low, it is for a children's production that will have to tour- in a van with other scenic elements.
My concern with hooking it up to the lighting system and running it from the board is that the ques have to be rewritten each morning at each new venue.
Trying to make it easier on the Stage Manager/ crew [cast].
Thoughts?

Have you considered a rotary dial indicator that could be operated by one of the cast members or backstage crew?

What kind of board? If you have subs, assign it to one and just use it to turn it on and off at will. You can build it into the cuestack but it is more trouble than it's worth in your case.
